Checo Pérez and Valtteri Bottas leave the Austrian GP and finish at the bottom of the classification
The Mexican driver regretted his retirement due to a brake problem and assured that Cadillac had the pace to fight for better positions
The 2026 Austrian Grand Prix left a hard blow for Sergio “Checo” Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, who abandoned the race held at the Red Bull Ring and finished in the last places in the standings after suffering mechanical problems.
While George Russell took the victory with Mercedes, the weekend ended in the worst way for Cadillac, a team that could not complete the competition with either of its two drivers.
Checo Pérez abandons due to a brake problem
The outlook looked promising for Checo Pérez, who remained in the fight for points during the first laps. However, overheating in the brake system forced the Mexican to retire early from the Austrian Grand Prix.
At the end of the race, the man from Guadalajara explained what happened and recognized that the team lost an important opportunity.
"Today we had very bad luck. The brakes overheated while driving in traffic and we had to retire," he declared moments after abandoning.
The abandonment left the Mexican without the possibility of adding points on the eighth round of the Formula 1 World Championship, in a complicated day for the American team.
Checo assures that Cadillac had the pace to fight
Despite the abandonment, Checo Pérez considers that the car's performance was competitive and that there were options to finish in the fight with Williams.
"We were in the fight and we had the pace to fight with the Williams. I overtook Alex (Albon, Thai, the partner of the Spanish Carlos Sainz in the Grove team), so it was a superlative shame not to have gotten everything possible today," he said.
The statements reflect the frustration of the Mexican, who saw it possible to rescue a positive result before presenting the mechanical failure.
Valtteri Bottas also leaves and Cadillac signs a Sunday to be forgotten
Cadillac's poor result was completed with the abandonment of Valtteri Bottas, leaving both drivers at the bottom of the official classification of the Austrian Grand Prix.
The team left Spielberg without points and will now have to analyze the failures that affected its two cars before the next round of the championship.
Checo Pérez is already thinking about Silverstone
With his sights set on the British Grand Prix, Checo Pérez hopes that the team will find answers to prevent the mechanical problems from recurring.
“We have to delve deeper into the analysis and see what conclusions we can reach with a view to Silverstone (home of the next Grand Prix, the British Grand Prix, next weekend),” Checo concluded.
The next date of the Formula 1 World Championship will be held next weekend in Silverstone, where Cadillac will seek to leave behind a complicated passage through Austria and return to the fight for the points.
