Mexico overcame its early stumbles to defeat Great Britain 8-2, in the first winning start for the Mexican team in the history of the World Baseball Classic, where the team managed by Benjamin Gil featured Nacho as the offensive stars Alvarez and Jonathan Aranda.
A victory that was painstakingly built by the Mexican team in the opening game of Group B, played at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas (USA). After Nacho Alvarez's opening home run in the second inning, the Mexicans struggled offensively until the eighth inning when Jonathan Aranda secured the three runs that sparked the Mexican team's first victory of the tournament.
Alvarez, the 22-year-old third baseman, connected on a powerful long swing that cleared the fence off starter Jack Anderson. This seemed to give the Mexican team confidence, but they still faced several scares, such as in the bottom of the fourth inning when Javier Assad's wildness resulted in a walk to Harry Ford. However, the situation was brought under control.
But in the fifth inning, the English team returned to the attack when Ian Lewis reached first base with a single, forcing manager Benjamin Gil to send Luis Gastelum was greeted with a single by Thompson. Then, with two men on the corners, Gastelum got Jazz Chisholm to ground out to the outfield, where Jarren Duran made the catch. But the Europeans stopped chasing Mexico, tying the game with a four-bagger by Harry Ford off reliever Alex Carrillo, just as the Mexican team was relying on its inexperienced short relievers. But after that, Mexico responded in the eighth thanks to Gary Gill Hill's wildness, who walked Jarren Duran and Randy Arozarena, setting the stage for Jonathan Aranda to hit a home run off Hill's reliever, Tristan Beck, making the score 4-1.The Mexican offense maintained its power in the ninth inning with a single by Alex Thomas that drove in Javier Serna and Nick Gonzales. Joey Ortiz drove in another run with a single by Thomas, and Randy Arozarena followed suit with Ortiz to seal the 8-1 victory. In the bottom of the ninth, Great Britain closed the gap to 8-2 against Andres Munoz, the Mexican team's star closer, but that was the only damage in the overall score of the game, as they prepare for Saturday's matchup against Italy.
