Official! The Mexican national team breaks a historical tradition with its new technical director
The Mexican team took the first step towards continuity in its coaching staff by officially naming Rafael Márquez as replacement for Javier Aguirre
The Mexican Football Federation has made a historic movement official. In a decision that breaks with the custom of instability on the bench, he fully committed to the continuity of the World Cup process. Rafael Márquez is formally the new technical director of the Mexico national team, taking over after the management of Javier Aguirre.
This designation takes no one by surprise. When the “Kaiser” originally signed to be “Vasco” Aguirre's assistant, the FMF high command guaranteed him by contract that he would be the one chosen to continue the sports project with a view to the 2030 World Cup.
An orderly transition to the future
Through an official statement, the Mexican Football Federation emphasized the relevance of this institutional change: "The appointment of Rafael Márquez is part of an orderly transition planned within the institutional vision of the FMF to continue the work carried out during the last World Cup cycle, strengthen the sporting development of the Mexican National Team and face its upcoming international commitments."
This represents the second major challenge in Márquez's nascent career as chief strategist, following his time at Barcelona Atlètic in Spain's silver division. Now, the pressure on his shoulders will be maximum, as he receives a team that managed to recover part of the credibility lost in the last World Cup. Who will make up his coaching staff?
Although the names will be made official in the coming days, additions of historic weight are already presumed for the Tri dressing room. Figures like Andrés Guardado (with recent training at Real Betis) and Alfredo Talavera are emerging to accompany him on the bench.
Furthermore, Márquez will not start from scratch: he will inherit a robust work team made up of nearly 56 sports specialists who already collaborated closely in the previous management. The official debut of the “Kaiser”
Rafael Márquez's debut as the 46th technical director in the history of the Mexican National Team is scheduled for the FIFA Date in September. Two friendly matches are contemplated with rivals and venues yet to be confirmed under the new order of the international calendar.
With this, Márquez inscribes his name in the list of historical coaches in Mexico, sharing distinction with figures such as Ricardo La Volpe, Juan Carlos Osorio, Hugo Sánchez and Javier Aguirre himself.
