Oscar de la Hoya lashes out at Crawford for not paying sanction to WBC
Oscar de la Hoya commented that he thought it was very wrong of Terence Crawford not to want to collaborate with the Jose Sulaiman Foundation
Oscar de la Hoya lashed out at Terence Crawford, unified super middleweight champion, for not paying the sanction fees to the World Boxing Council (WBC) and admitted that he was very disappointed.
In his weekly segment 'Clapback On Thursday's Instagram post, De La Hoya reminded Crawford that it was thanks to the sanctioning bodies that he was able to climb the rankings and that he thought it was wrong of him not to want to collaborate with the Jose Sulaiman Foundation. “How do you think you got to that level? Through the ranking system. They positioned you to earn that kind of money. Come on, you're 38 years old, you've been paying sanctioning fees for a long time in the past, this isn't anything new. I thought you had respect for boxing and the sport,” he said. “Do you know what the Jose Sulaiman Foundation does with those fees that you refuse to pay? It helps kids get off the streets, it provides homes for former fighters. That money goes into retirement funds, that money pays hospital bills for fighters who can't afford it, so just because you made it to the top, Crawford, and earned $50 million, you don't want to pay that fee anymore, that's wrong, I'm very disappointed.” He concluded.
Recall that during the 63rd Annual WBC Convention in Bangkok, Thailand, President Mauricio Sulaiman explained that the WBC proposed reducing his fees from 3% to 0.6% after his victory over Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, but despite efforts to resolve the issue, they received no response from the American. For this reason, he was stripped of his title.
That adjustment was worth $300,000, of which $225,000 was to be donated to the Jose Sulaiman Fund, which is dedicated to helping boxers in need. Terence Crawford reacted to the news and asserted that Sulaiman is only upset because he beat the Mexican.
In his last appearance in the ring, Terence Crawford defeated Canelo Alvarez by unanimous decision. With this result,The American fighter dethroned the Mexican in the super middleweight division and made history by becoming an undisputed champion in a different weight class for the third time. Terence Crawford, 37, became the undisputed champion in three different weight divisions by defeating the Mexican and made boxing history. The American fighter remains undefeated and now has 42 wins, 31 of them by knockout.
