Pat Murphy and Stephen Vogt awarded the Major League Manager of the Year award
Both repeat the recognition and join a select group of managers with consecutive titles
Pat Murphy, of the Milwaukee Brewers, and Stephen Vogt, of the Cleveland Guardians, were distinguished this Tuesday as the winners of the 2025 Manager of the Year award in Major League Baseball.
Veteran Murphy took the award in the National League, while Vogt repeated in the American League, establishing himself as one of the most promising managers in the circuit. The selection was made by the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA), which recognizes the most outstanding strategists in both leagues each season. With this distinction, Murphy and Vogt join a very exclusive club: Bobby Cox (2004-2005) and Kevin Cash (2020-2021) are the only other two managers who have won the award in consecutive years. Murphy's merit and Milwaukee's strength. Murphy, 66, beat out Rob Thomson of the Philadelphia Phillies and Terry Francona of the Cincinnati Reds in the voting. The Brewers' manager had already made history in 2014 by becoming the first in the franchise to win this award, and now he reaffirms it after leading another outstanding season. Milwaukee finished the year with a record of 97 wins and 67 losses, the best mark in all of Major League Baseball. Under his leadership, the team returned to the playoffs, although they fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the defending champions. In the voting, which takes place before the start of the postseason, participants award five points to first place, three to second, and one to third. No manager appeared on every ballot, reflecting the competitiveness of the season. Vogt, the young leader who made history in Cleveland. On the other hand, 40-year-old Stephen Vogt was once again recognized as the best manager in the American League. He is only the second manager in league history to win the award consecutively, matching Kevin Cash's record with the Tampa Bay Rays (2020-2021).
Since his arrival in Cleveland,Vogt has revitalized a team that combines youth and tactical discipline. His two awards bring to six the total number of times a Guardians manager has been honored with this recognition, adding to Terry Francona's three wins (2013, 2016, and 2022) and Eric Wedge's (2007). Dan Wilson of the Seattle Mariners finished second, and John Schneider of the Toronto Blue Jays took third. Schneider achieved the best finish for a Toronto manager since Cito Gaston was runner-up in 1989.
