Serena Williams rules out a return to tennis, despite rumors
Serena Williams insists she will
The possibility of Serena Williams' return was reignited on social media and in the press this Tuesday, after it was revealed that the former player had been reinstated in tennis's anti-doping control group. The fact immediately drew attention, as the sport's rules require any retired athlete to undergo out-of-competition testing for six months before being eligible to play in a sanctioned tournament. This simple administrative move sparked speculation about a possible comeback, three years after her departure from the circuit. However, Williams herself quickly put a stop to the conversation. Through a post on X, the 23-time Grand Slam champion was emphatic: “OMG, I am not coming back! This firestorm is crazy!” Her message stemmed the tide of theories, although she offered no details about the reason for her re-entry into the anti-doping system. Rumors, rules, and a standard process: Williams played her last professional match on September 2, 2022, when she lost to Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open. Just a day later, she officially notified the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) of her retirement, which excluded her from regular anti-doping controls. Therefore, the confirmation of her name's return to the registry drew attention even within official bodies. An ITIA spokesperson confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that Williams had rejoined the agency's testing pool. As the regulations state, "retired players cannot return to official events unless they have submitted for out-of-competition testing for at least six months prior to the event in question." This requirement fueled speculation that something might be afoot, although none of this was confirmed by the former tennis player. Nor were there any further explanations from her team. The truth is, although she never wanted to use the word "retirement," Williams was clear about her direction when she announced her decision to step away from tennis in Vogue in 2022. "Perhaps the best word to describe what I'm doing is evolution," she said at the time.“I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving, moving away from tennis, towards other things that are important to me.”
