Arrogance of Sergio Ramos or success of Antonio Mohamed in the penalty missed vs. Toluca?
After the penalty missed by former Real Madrid player Sergio Ramos against Toluca, it remains to be seen whether the Spaniard was arrogant or if Mohamed had a lot to do with it.
At a time when Sergio Ramos, former Real Madrid defender, is the most criticized in Mexican football for his apparent arrogance in taking the penalty that put Monterrey in Toluca's hands for the 6-2 thrashing.
After this play, it didn't take long for the doubt to arise as to whether the Spaniard was arrogant or if the supposed advice from coach Antonio Mohamed was decisive in beating the former Real Madrid player, especially because some time ago when he managed Celta de Vigo, Ramos scored a goal in this way.
The truth is that beyond all this media manipulation, this play was decisive in the future of the result, where Monterrey was very scraped by a thrashing that the Sultana del Norte team had not received for 25 years and where they were made to look really bad.
It was the 18th minute and Ramos stood in front of the penalty to face Hugo Gonzalez, Rayados goalkeeper. Their eyes met, while the Spaniard took time to make things more exciting and put pressure on the Mexican goalkeeper of the scarlet team.
Suddenly, Ramos got going, paused, stopped and launched the shot, chipping the ball to the goalkeeper who stood firm as the former Real Madrid leader's shot came from his feet, delivering it to the goalkeeper's hands.
Gonzalez took the ball, launched it to a teammate to start a counterattack that was about to generate another goal from the Portuguese Paulinho, who was the star of the match with three goals and a high-level performance.
Ramos' mistake immediately set social networks ablaze and at the end of the game, Toluca coach Antonio Mohamed increased the controversy by stating that he knew Ramos would chip the shot after remembering a play he had between Celta de Vigo and Real Madrid, when the famous "Turco" directed Celta and Ramos scored a penalty like this.
“Last night I couldn't sleep in the middle of a movie, it was like 1:30 in the morning or two,I was on YouTube and I started to see when we faced each other, when I had to face Sergio Ramos, I started watching Celta Vigo against Real Madrid and he scored a goal against us with a penalty. I remembered and at that moment I said to Angulo. 'Tell Hugo that he's going to chip it,' sometimes he's lucky, and sometimes he's not, it's like I dreamed it,” expressed the controversial Turco Mohamed.
But Mohamed went further in his exposition: “It was a help for the team and the team reacted and we were able to win the game, but that's how it happened, that crossed my mind because just last night I was watching the images and I felt that at that moment he was going to win the game.”
“So we were able to get it right in football, especially a player of this caliber. He has a lot of resources, and in this case we were able to guess. This doesn't have to change our goal of continuing along the same path, it was one game and there is no six-goal difference with Monterrey," said the coach of the current Mexican soccer champion.
A great victory
Regarding the 6-2 thrashing, Mohamed highlighted his squad's performance above the result and explained that: “This team has strong weapons and from work they not only defend very well from the recovery. They score goals, sometimes we need five or six touches to score a goal and we can do it and sometimes we do it with two touches, that's why I say that I feel very identified, I like that the team is a bit of a chameleon that can change the way of playing at different moments of the game.”
Finally, he highlighted that the game, despite the victory, was a learning experience: “It left us with a lot of lessons because we started on our feet, we could have gone two to zero, but in that process we had options. Afterwards it was a huge satisfaction to feel represented by this team, because it can be goals in small spaces or open field, they fall back and play in a different way for me, it is a pleasure to feel identified with my players, and then we know the rival that we beat has the hierarchy that they have, that they are a rival that we are going to face later, sometimes it happens in these types of matches, it is not a real difference, we could have taken advantage and we could have done more”, he concluded.
