Teachers and families of missing people collapse access to the Azteca Stadium
The National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) and the relatives of missing people press the date of the opening of the World Cup
Less than 48 hours before the opening of the 2026 World Cup, the marches for social demands in CDMX, such as that of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) and the families of the missing, put FIFA in check due to the blockades at the accesses to the Azteca stadium.
Around 10 in the morning, the members of both groups converged on one of the main access roads to the three-time World Cup venue such as Calzada de Tlalpan, to the extent of keeping vehicular access closed about five kilometers away from the stage where Mexico against South Africa will get the ball rolling in the World Cup tournament.
These marches generated confusion, annoyance and confrontations with the inhabitants of these southern areas of the city, anticipating what will happen next Thursday on the scheduled date for the start of the World Cup and where it is assured that the demands will intensify.
To make matters worse, the owners of the boxes of the World Cup property also gathered in this same place to complain against FIFA for several unfulfilled promises regarding the use of said locations and which has also generated a legal confrontation and could lead to a social claim along with that of the CNTE.
The authorities of the government of Mexico City saw the need to carry out traffic cuts to divert traffic around the World Cup venue, although it is assured that on Thursday they will settle in the four accesses that exist to reach this mythical venue.
Very affected circulation
At 10:40 in the morning, the Light Train, which connects the Taxqueña terminal with the Azteca Stadium and with the Xochimilco Mayor's Office, in the south of Mexico City, announced the closure of all stations until the transit of the protesters concludes.
The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City made traffic cuts in Calzada de Tlalpan to guarantee the safety of the protesters, which has caused heavy traffic congestion in the area.
During their transit to the south, the protesters hung from a pedestrian bridge located on the corner of this artery with the Avenida de las Rosas a banner calling for a boycott of the Soccer World Cup, which was removed after a few minutes.
Reports indicate that security elements with helmets and shields were deployed in the vicinity of the Azteca Stadium, as well as at the intersection of this road and Division del Norte Avenue. It is also reported that a wall and a truck barricade were installed that obstruct the road to prevent the passage of the contingent.
The CNTE demands, among other things, the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law and the 2019 Educational Reform, the return to the pension system without Afores and a 100% salary increase to the base salary.
