The bad play by Marcel Ruiz that keeps him away from the Premier League
Marcel Ruiz and his environment rejected a Championship offer for not wanting to play in the second division. That club promoted to the Premier League
In Mexican soccer they made a bad decision regarding the future of Marcel Ruiz. The midfielder had an offer from the England Championship, but he didn't see it as a good idea. Ruiz preferred to stay with Toluca in the MX Liga and wasted a good opportunity to be in the Premier League.
The team that approached was Ipswich Town, Marcelo Flores's former team. However, this project did not convince in the footballer's environment . The English team would have offered $10 million dollars for the Mexican's sign. But playing in the Championship wasn't attractive for Ruiz.
“We have talked with him, and with his agent, who seems to me to be one of the more correct agents with whom we have had to talk. In the end, about the second divisions, because there were two (offer as): Ipswich Town and some other, the Ipswich thing was formal, but talking with Marcel we believed that it was not the time nor the ideal place”, explained Santiago San Román, former football director of Toluca.
With Monday's newspaper the decision was bad for Marcel Ruiz's future. But the argument of the career managers of the Mexican wasn't so questionable. England's second division is not a simple tournament. Arming with a good squad doesn't guarantee promotion to the Premier League.
However, there were more positive factors in this hypothetical change. In the event that Ipswich Town had not achieved promotion, a good tournament by Marcel Ruiz would have placed them or as a possible reinforcement of the clubs promoted to the Premier League. But the reality is different and the Mexican finds disputing the Clausura 2026 Liga with Toluca.
The season of Ipswich Town
After 46 long days in the Championship, Ipswich Town managed to take second place in the tournament. Ipswich Town remained or 11 units from first place, but they did what was necessary to position themselves one point above Millwall (third in the table).
The Ipswich Town left a balance of 23 wins, 15 draws and only 8 defeats. The team led by Kieran M cKenna ended his bad streak and returned to the Premier League after his fleeting relegation in the 2024-2025 season.
