Generative AI feels like talking to someone you trust. You write to it, it replies, and everything seems to stay on the screen. The catch is that many platforms record conversations to debug bugs, prevent abuse, and, in some cases, improve models (sometimes with opt-out options, other times not so clear).
That trail can live longer than you imagine, and if you share it from a work account or a "normal" chat, it can end up in analytics systems, internal reviews, or training datasets, depending on the service and your privacy settings.
The risk isn't just "AI is spying on you." 1. Passwords (and also 2FA codes, recovery keys, session tokens): if someone accesses that chat, or if you copy/paste it where it shouldn't be, you've lost your account, don't question about it. 4. Health: medical results, diagnoses, prescriptions, policy numbers, authorizations, photos of exams, mental health information, or any highly sensitive data. It's not just about privacy: this information can be used for social engineering, targeted scams, or discrimination if it ends up in the wrong hands.
5. Location and routines: your exact address, real-time location, itineraries (“I leave on Friday and return on Monday”), your children's school information, and habits (“the house is empty at this time”). This is gold for stalkers and thieves. If you need recommendations, use broad areas (“east side,” “near the subway”) and avoid exact times. Imagine asking AI to “help me write a bank complaint” and pasting a screenshot with your full name, account number, address, and transaction details. That message can be recorded, forwarded to support systems, or reviewed for moderation. If something goes wrong in the chain, you've already given away everything a scammer needs to impersonate you. How to use AI without giving away your privacy? It's not about panicking, but about using AI wisely. The rule of thumb is simple: if you wouldn't post it on social media or tell it to a stranger, don't paste it into the chat. Prioritize privacy by design, not by hope.
