Apple released a surprise iOS 18 update that you should install right now
Apple released a surprise iOS 18.7.7 update, an urgent security patch that fixes the dangerous DarkSword exploit
If you have an iPhone and haven't yet updated to iOS 26, there's a very important notification waiting for you on your screen. Apple has just released an emergency security update for all users still running iOS 18, and it's not just any update: it's a direct response to a dangerous exploit that has already been used by hackers in multiple countries around the world. Here's everything you need to know.
What is DarkSword and why should you be worried?
The name sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but the danger is very real. DarkSword is a chain of exploits discovered by the Google Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) that affects iPhones running iOS 18.4 through iOS 18.7. What makes this exploit especially dangerous is its method: instead of exploiting a single vulnerability, it chains together multiple security flaws to infiltrate the victim's device without them noticing.
According to Google, several commercial spyware vendors and actors linked to nation-states have been actively using DarkSword in various attack campaigns. We're not talking about amateur hackers; these are organized groups with resources and specific objectives. The exploit has already been used for espionage and cryptocurrency theft, and has compromised user devices in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Ukraine. The situation has become increasingly tense in recent weeks. Criticism of Apple has grown because the company was slow to release a retroactive patch for all iPhones running iOS 18, and in that time DarkSword spread among various hacker groups who used it as a tool for both espionage and financial fraud. What the iOS 18.7.7 update brings and who needs it. Apple responded to the problem in two stages. First, it released iOS 18.7.7 only for older models that cannot run iOS 26, such as the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and the seventh-generation iPad. But this left millions of users exposed who have an iPhone compatible with iOS 26 but who...For whatever reason, they hadn't yet made the jump to the new version of the operating system. Now, Apple has just released a new build of iOS 18.7.7, build number 22H340,available for absolutely all iPhones still running iOS 18, regardless of whether the device is compatible with iOS 26 or not. In the security industry, this is known as a "patch backport": it's essentially bringing a modern security fix back to an older version of the system to protect users who haven't updated. In an official statement to Wired, Apple explained that it's releasing this update "so that users with automatic updates turned on can automatically receive important security protections." At the same time, the company took the opportunity to reiterate its recommendation: update to iOS 26 as soon as possible to have the most advanced protections available. Currently, iOS 26 is already installed on 74% of iPhones released in the last four years.
How to update your iPhone right now, step by step
You don't need to be a tech expert to do this. The process takes less than 10 minutes and can save you a huge headache. Follow these steps:
If you already have automatic updates enabled, your iPhone may have already downloaded or even installed the patch while you were sleeping. Either way, it's worth checking manually to make sure everything is up to date.
And if your device supports iOS 26, now is a great time to consider making the jump to the new system. Apple directly recommends it, and with threats like Darksword lurking, having the latest software version has never been more important.
