How to know if my WhatsApp was cloned: 2 quick tricks
Two quick checks within WhatsApp can help you detect suspicious access and protect your account before someone uses it without permission
When it comes to WhatsApp, where there is usually sensitive information (avoid it) and important conversations, you need to move very quickly if your account has been cloned. Although the term is a bit technical, it refers to the fact that your account may be activated on an unknown or unauthorized device. Through techniques such as stealing verification codes, fake links, or simply neglecting to log out of WhatsApp Web on an unfamiliar computer, any malicious actor could take control without you noticing immediately. However, there are two quick checks within the application itself that allow you to identify in seconds if someone else might be using your account. To do this, open the application and go to "Settings." Then look for the "Linked devices" option. There you will see a list of computers, tablets, or phones that have active access to your account.
If you see any device you don't recognize or that you never authorized, it could mean that someone managed to link your account from another device. In that case, it's recommended that you immediately log out of that device from the same menu.
This feature also shows what type of device was used to access your account, which helps identify potential unauthorized access.
2. Check the latest device activity
Another quick way to detect potential unauthorized access is to check the time and date of the last connection recorded on each linked device.
In the same connected devices section, the application shows when each device last used your account. If recent activity appears on a device you didn't use or at a time when you weren't using the application, it could be a red flag.
Although it doesn't always mean the account was cloned, it is an indication that should be investigated immediately.
In more serious cases, you can contact the app's support from the help section and contact your phone carrier to temporarily block the SIM card if you suspect someone is trying to use your number.
