Pinterest announces layoffs of 15% of its staff to invest in AI
The image board and collection creation platform indicated that the next hires will be for people with knowledge of artificial intelligence
This Tuesday, the American social network that allows users to create and manage themed personal boards, among other things, Pinterest announced a 15% reduction in its staff in order to reallocate its resources to incorporate Artificial Intelligence into its platform.
Through a statement, a Pinterest commented that, “we are “We are implementing organizational changes to further advance our AI-driven strategy, which includes hiring talent with AI experience. Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to lay off some members of our team,” the company said. The platform, which allows its users to create image collections based on events, interests, hobbies, and more, indicated that it has already submitted its layoff plan to the regulatory body. According to the statement, the layoffs “will affect less than 15% of the workforce and will include reductions in office space.” The company, founded in 2008 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, has approximately 4,666 employees, according to FactSet data. However, the decision to cut jobs is intended to reduce costs and create more cash flow for employees to focus on developing AI-powered products. With this adjustment, the company hopes to accelerate sales. According to details in the statement, this plan is expected to conclude on September 30, 2026, and will include tax charges of up to $45 million. Pinterest is not the only company that has decided to cut jobs in recent months to invest in AI. Amazon and Nike announced this week that they will lay off 16,000 and 775 employees respectively to further automate their operations.
