Qualcomm sent a letter to its customers announcing a double-digit percentage price increase, as revealed by Bloomberg News, and this is going to change the price landscape of the mobile technology that we consume every day.

What Qualcomm told its customers

The news came directly from a letter sent on Friday, July 24, where the smartphone chip giant was quite clear with its partner manufacturers. The price increase will take effect for products shipped on or after September 1, meaning the window of time for brands to adjust their own prices is quite short.

Qualcomm, which is the largest manufacturer of smartphone processors in the world, explained that it has already exhausted its capacity to absorb the increasing costs imposed on it by its own suppliers. The company even tried to look for alternative components with other vendors to avoid this scenario, but simply did not find a viable solution. As a result, it had no choice but to pass this economic blow on to its customers, that is, to the brands that manufacture the cell phones that we use every day.

This announcement did not fall from the sky. Already in previous months Qualcomm had warned about a global memory shortage that was affecting its financial forecasts, and its CEO Cristiano Amon had directly pointed out this factor as responsible for the company not meeting Wall Street expectations.

Why this is bad news for your pocketbook

It could even reach up to 15% in special orders for high-performance chips. So the pressure is coming from several fronts at once, and everything indicates that mobile technology will become more expensive before the year is out.

The déjà vu of laptops and RAM

The culprit behind all this price chaos has its own name and it is artificial intelligence. The explosive demand for data centers to train AI models is absorbing the production of memory and components that were previously destined for cell phones and computers. TrendForce analysts even project that supplier agreements could rise between 40% and 50% during 2026 and 2027, so this is not a matter of a few weeks but a couple of years with inflated prices.

With all this information on the table, the practical conclusion is simple. If you already had your eye on a specific cell phone or tablet, buying it now is much smarter than waiting, because in a few weeks or months that same device will probably cost considerably more. Brands need time to renegotiate contracts and adjust their catalogs, but when the increase from Qualcomm and TSMC trickles down to retail prices, the hit will come straight to your pocket, just as it already did with laptops and RAM.
