YouTube Premium Lite adds background playback and downloads
YouTube's budget plan gets a refresh with features previously exclusive to the full plan
YouTube officially announced that it is adding two features to YouTube Premium Lite that users have been requesting for months: background playback and content downloads for offline viewing.
The announcement was made by Neal Mohan, CEO of YouTube, who expressed enthusiasm for offering subscribers greater flexibility when choosing their experience on the platform. According to Mohan, the decision is a direct response to user feedback received during the pilot phase conducted last year, when the service expanded to new markets. The update began rolling out on February 24, 2026, and will be deployed gradually in all countries where Premium Lite is already available, including the United States, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Spain, and other regions in Latin America and Asia. What does YouTube Premium Lite now include, and how does background playback work? Background playback is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated features for those who use YouTube as a source for podcasts, lectures, interviews, or tutorials. Until now, when you exited the app or turned off your phone's screen, the video would simply stop. With this update, the audio continues playing even if the user switches apps or locks their mobile device. This makes a huge difference for those who, for example, listen to content while driving, exercising, or doing housework. The consumption experience becomes much smoother and doesn't interrupt the user's daily routine. However, it's important to clarify that this feature will not be available for Shorts or music content, such as official music videos or songs licensed from music partners. To access these features, Premium Lite subscribers don't need to take any additional action. YouTube indicated that the rollout is automatic and gradual for all plan members in enabled markets.
What advantages do offline downloads offer with YouTube Premium Lite?
The second major new feature is the ability to download videos directly from the platform to watch them without an internet connection. This feature is especially valuable for those who travel frequently, commute on the subway, or live in areas with unreliable signal.Saving content in advance eliminates dependence on Wi-Fi or mobile data at the time of consumption.
Before this update, offline downloads were an exclusive feature of the standard YouTube Premium plan, which costs $13.99 per month. With Premium Lite, priced at $7.99 per month, users gain access to this capability for approximately 40% less. This makes the Lite plan a considerably more competitive option in the video subscription market.
As with background playback, downloads do not apply to Shorts or music videos protected by agreements with record labels.
To access these content categories without restrictions, the full YouTube Premium plan remains the recommended option, according to the company itself.
YouTube's decision to enhance Premium Lite is part of a broader platform strategy: to build a tiered subscription ecosystem that caters to different user profiles and budgets. With over 325 million paid subscriptions across services like YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, and Google One, the company aims to continue growing without excluding those who cannot or do not wish to pay the higher price.
This move also comes as YouTube is projected to surpass $60 billion in annual revenue by 2025, positioning itself as the second-largest audiovisual entertainment company in the world by revenue, second only to Disney. Strengthening its subscription plans is clearly one of the key drivers of this growth.
