Aircraft with up to 20 people aboard crashes in Tennessee
Several people were airlifted to hospitals after a skydiving plane crashed in Coffee County
An aircraft with several people aboard crashed Sunday in Coffee County, Tennessee, about 60 miles south of Nashville, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Tullahoma Airport confirmed the plane involved was a skydiving plane. Three people were evacuated from the scene by helicopter, and one person with more serious injuries was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The rest were taken for medical observation. No fatalities have been reported at this time.
“Initial reports suggest there were between 16 and 20 people on board. Some were airlifted to nearby hospitals,” authorities detailed in a post on X.
A highway patrol video shows damage to the plane’s tail, which appears to have come off along with other parts of the aircraft. Yellow caution tape is seen blocking off the area where the plane came to a stop while authorities investigate.
The plane, a DeHavilland DH-6 Twin Otter, departed from Tullahoma Airport at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time Sunday.
Early investigations indicate the aircraft was a skydiving plane that crashed after hitting some trees and landed next to the Beechcraft Aviation Museum.
Local authorities are on scene, and Federal Aviation Administration personnel are headed to the area.
The U.S. has recorded at least 50 fatal plane crashes so far this year, claiming the lives of approximately 126 people, according to preliminary data from the National Transportation Safety Board.
