Gunman planning possible mass shooting arrested at Florida airport
Michael Rodrigues, 41, was carrying a fully loaded AR-15 rifle, a machete and knives in a restricted area of Palm Beach Airport
Florida sheriff deputies averted a potential mass shooting by arresting a man with high-powered weapons just outside a busy airport, authorities said.
Operations personnel at Palm Beach International Airport reported a suspicious man at a restricted area, according to officers.
The suspect was identified as Michael Rodrigues, and was in a parked rental car when they began their investigation into his strange behavior.
When officers opened the glove compartment to check the rental agreement, they discovered a fully stocked AR-15 rifle magazine inside, wrote Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office (PBSO).
Officers continued to search the car and found a fully loaded AR-15 rifle, a machete, and knives, suspecting they may have thwarted the 41-year-old's evil plan.
Some of those lethal weapons were hidden under a blanket in the car, according to The Miami Herald.
Detectives questioned Rodrigues before his arrest for trespassing on airport property, cocaine possession, and firearm possession by a convicted felon. He is being held without bail.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that Rodrigues, a Palm Beach Gardens resident, has a pending felony case, an active domestic violence warrant, and several other law enforcement encounters.
