Man dies in shooting during party at Houston apartment complex
The 31-year-old victim was shot multiple times after a fight at a gathering in the Westchase neighborhood. Police are investigating the cause of the attack.
A party at the Westchase Forest apartment complex in southwest Houston ended in a shooting that left one man dead Saturday night.
From According to the Houston Police Department (HPD), the incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. at the residential complex located at 11355 Richmond Avenue, in the Westchase neighborhood.
Fight, gunshots, and panic
When HPD West Division officers arrived at the scene, they found dozens of people gathered and visibly upset. Witnesses reported that, in the middle of the celebration, a fight broke out that quickly escalated into a shootout.
"Everyone started running when the shots were heard," one of those present told the officers, according to Telemundo. Amid the confusion, a man approximately 31 years old was struck by multiple gunshot wounds.
Houston Fire Department (HFD) personnel responded to provide assistance, but could only confirm his death at the scene.
Authorities specified that the shooting took place in the lobby of the building, in front of one of the apartments and a few meters from the main parking lot. A firearm was recovered at the scene and several people were detained for questioning as possible witnesses or suspects.
The lieutenant in charge of the investigation indicated that, at this time, the motive for the attack or the relationship between the victim and the alleged aggressors has not been confirmed. The investigation will continue to determine if formal charges will be filed against any of those arrested.
The violent episode has generated concern among area residents, who in recent months have reported an increase in disturbances and calls about noise and conflicts at private parties.
The police reiterated their call to the community to collaborate by providing any information that will help clarify the case and prevent future acts of violence.
