The value of the 1 centa coins of almost 200 years
Some 1-cent coins minted in the 19th century can be worth thousands of dollars: learn which ones they are and what makes them so valuable to collectors
Although a penny seems to have little value today, certain coins from almost two centuries ago can be worth thousands of dollars on the collector's market. The world of numismatics in the United States maintains a high demand for old pennies, especially those with unique characteristics or minting errors.
Many of these coins were manufactured between the mid- and late 19th century, when the U.S. Mint began producing smaller pennies. Some pieces feature special details such as mint marks, different inscriptions, or errors that make them true gems today.
Among the most coveted by collectors are the Indian Head series pennies, as well as limited editions or coins with visible rarities. These are some of the 1-cent coins that could be sitting in a drawer and are worth a fortune:
1. 1864-L Ribbon Cent, RD (Red)
Known for having a small “L” on the ribbon of its Native American headdress, this coin is part of the Indian Head series. Auction values can range from $68 to $519, depending on condition.
2. 1873 Closed “3” Cent, RD
This piece is distinguished by a thicker “3” on the date. This variant is rarer than the “open 3” version, making it one of the most valuable. It can fetch as much as $54,625.
3. 1871 Cent, RD
Another example from the Indian Head series, minted in 1871. This coin is sought after for its rarity and age. It can sell for up to $60,000.
4. 1888/7 Cent, RB (Red Brown)
This cent has a unique feature: the number 7 was overminted by an 8, which is very rare. There are very few examples in good condition. Its value is around $70,000.
5. 1872 Cent, RD
Also part of the Indian Head series, this unmarked coin has a shield reverse. In the auction market it has reached $126,$500.
6. 1856 Flying Eagle Penny
The most valuable of all. Although it was primarily minted in 1857, there are 1856 versions. This Flying Eagle penny can sell for as much as $172,500.
