They will release a documentary on Sarah McBride, the first transgender member of Congress
Defending the rights of transgender women allowed Sarah McBride to jump from politics to the big screen
Sarah McBride, the first transgender member of Congress to be banned from using the women's restrooms on the premises, is the subject of the documentary “State of Firsts,” which premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival.
In 2020, the 34-year-old Democrat years ago she was elected senator to represent Delaware, largely for her fight to try to reduce discrimination based on gender identity in employment, housing, insurance and public accommodations, which made her an opponent of the current federal administration.
In this sense, the figure of Sarah McBride has gained greater notoriety in American politics and hence they have decided to produce a documentary about her struggle in politics.
"I think people misunderstand the difference between activists and elected officials, and the role that each of these positions plays in social change and the social movement," she said recently.
The documentary "State of Firsts" shows how, before the Democratic primaries held in Delaware in September, McBride knocked on the doors of voters trying to convince them not to stop voting and exercise their right as she has done for years.
“It’s easy to tell a simple story about a person’s beginning or experience, but you don’t learn a lot of lessons from simple stories.
My motivation for taking this on was to help tell the story of what it was really like… so that others who come after me can learn some of the lessons and experiences, so that their experience will maybe be a little easier or they can live it a little better,” Sarah McBride said in an interview with NBC News prior to the premiere of the film project that reflects her fight to defend the LGBTQ community.
Chase Joynt,The documentary's director hopes his project will raise awareness among citizens about the powers and limitations that a transgender woman faces when holding political office.
