Border Patrol detains American after chasing him in Chicago
The agents put the young man, identified as Angel, in a van, but had to let him go.
Immigration actions in Chicago, Illinois, are revealing more operational tactics of federal agents, after they were recorded chasing a young American, they detained him, although they later had to release him.
“An American citizen in Chicago was kidnapped by the Border Patrol and abandoned on the street half a mile away. EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE FILMING THEM. They don't care if they get caught. They're not afraid of being held accountable," posted David Bier, director of Immigration Studies at the Cato Institute.
The post was accompanied by a report from WGN9, a local Chicago station, which first reported on Angel's case.
The footage shows the Chicago resident recording agents patrolling a neighborhood in a van on 83rd Street. The agents locate the young man, drive past him, but then turn back and ask him to stop.
“United States Border Patrol,” one of the agents can be heard saying.
Then four agents get out of the van, which had no official identification. The agents are dressed in plain clothes, as seen in the images captured by the boy's cell phone, as he walks away from the officers.
"Don't run, don't run, boy," is heard, but Angel ignores it and quickens his pace.
Once they catch up with Angel, the agents throw the phone to him, but he was near the house of his cousin, whom he was going to visit.
The images show the arrest, but Angel was released almost half a mile later.
Angel joins the Americans questioned and detained by immigration authorities. A recent report by ProPublica reveals that at least 170 Americans have been detained in the ongoing operations.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not explain why Angel was detained.
Because the Supreme Court authorized immigration agents to question people about their ethnicity or their Spanish speaking skills, civil rights advocates and lawyers suggest that anyone living in the US always carry official identification.
