Due to complications from pneumonia and heart and vascular disease, Dick Cheney, who was considered one of the most powerful US vice presidents in recent years, died at the age of 84.

During his time as a Republican politician, he served as Secretary of Defense under President George W. Bush and as vice president during the George W. Bush administration.

In 1968, while a congressional intern, he became a protege of Representative Donald Rumsfeld, a Republican from Illinois, and from then on, he rose through the ranks to become, decades later, the president's right-hand man.

As part of his conservative agenda, he addressed the controversial issues of the war against Iraq and terrorism, especially after the attacks suffered by the United States in 2001. However, years later, he became estranged from Donald Trump after his daughter, Liz Cheney, became the main Republican critic of the riots on January 6, 2021, at the Capitol and of Trump's attempt to reject the results of the presidential election that gave the victory to Democrat Joe Biden.

Even last year, Dick Cheney announced that he would vote for Kamala Harris as a presidential candidate, which provoked the anger of the current president of the nation.

For decades, he suffered from heart disease, and although he underwent heart surgery transplant, his health never fully recovered.

In a statement, the Cheney family announced the death of their patriarch, praising him for his service in government.

“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, holding positions such as White House Chief of Staff, Congressman from Wyoming, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States.

“Dick Cheney was a great man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country and to live with courage, honor, love, kindness, and a passion for fly fishing. We are deeply grateful for all he did for our nation. And we feel immensely fortunate to have loved and been loved by this noble and imposing man,” the letter states.
