ICE raids against immigrants in Chicago leave children trapped in chaos
Amid clashes, various reports show that children fear the intense ICE raids in Chicago
The immigration operations in Chicago, led by ICE, have generated a situation of chaos and tension in several neighborhoods of the city, where mass arrests of immigrants were recorded, generating a generalized atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among Hispanic communities, mainly among children.
Amid the whirlwind of the Trump administration's immigration offensive, parents, Teachers and caregivers have been grappling with how to explain to children what they saw: how much to tell them so they know enough to stay safe, but without having their childhood stolen. Since September 8, Operation Midway Blitz, launched by the Donald Trump administration, has been underway in Chicago, and the crackdown has intensified since then. The government's stated objective is to capture immigrants with criminal records in Illinois; however, as in most cases, there were no specific arrest warrants, and many of those detained had no outstanding legal issues. One of the most dramatic moments occurred on October 3, when children were playing on monkey bars outside Funston Elementary School just before noon when a white van drove down their street in Logan Square, a historically Hispanic neighborhood that has been undergoing gentrification for years. Cars followed, and drivers honked their horns to alert residents that they were federal agents. A scooter pulled up in front of the SUV, trying to block it. There were no mass protests; some teachers walking to lunch initially didn't realize what was happening. Suddenly, tear gas canisters flew from the SUV's window, and a cloud rose, first white, then green, and the street erupted into chaos. Some ran. Others yelled at the officers to leave. Sirens wailed toward them. Parents ran stop signs and drove on sidewalks to reach their children. Even though many families with children have legal status or are even American citizens by birth, the fear persists.generating strong tension in Chicago, but which is beginning to spread to other areas of the United States.
