Immigrant detentions are enriching the largest private prison companies in the US.
Holding immigrants detained by ICE has earned Geo Group and CoreCivic a multi-million dollar deal signed with the Trump administration
Geo Group and CoreCivic, the two largest private prison companies operating in the United States, are enriching themselves by working for the federal government, offering massive facilities where they can temporarily store immigrants detained by Immigration and Enforcement agents. Customs (ICE).
To achieve this, he deployed ICE personnel, as well as those of other federal agencies, throughout the country, giving them legal powers to detain immigrants with police records considered a threat to the rest of the population.
However, one of the major obstacles to continuing to advance with the strategy ordered by the 79-year-old New Yorker at the pace he intended, was the lack of massive spaces to deposit detained individuals.
Therefore, it was decided to sign contracts with Geo Group and CoreCivic, since both companies not only have facilities with enormous capacity to house individuals, but also those spaces are secure to prevent any escape attempt.
It should be noted that the White House allocated an initial budget of close to $30 billion to cover the costs of ICE arrests and the amount required to hold detained immigrants until their deportation.
Of all this money, a large slice was channeled to Geo Group and CoreCivic.
In addition, there is an additional budget of $45 billion dollars earmarked for the construction of new detention centers for adults and others for minors.
In its income report corresponding to the second quarter of this year, GEO Group obtained $636.2 million dollars, which implies an increase compared to the $607.2 million obtained a year ago.
For its part, CoreCivic registered $538.2 million in revenue for the months of April, May, and June, 9.8% higher than the same period a year earlier.
