Latino groups demand the Trump administration be held accountable for actions against migrants
Among the coalition's proposals, the review of federal police protocols by ICE agents stands out
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and the Hispanic Federation launched a joint campaign to demand greater transparency and accountability from the Donald Trump administration immigration policies that, they assert, have resulted in mass detentions and deportations across the United States.
The campaign advocates for “restoring congressional oversight of the enforcement of immigration laws,” as well as “reforming Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to ensure accountability and promote public safety," according to a statement from the associations. The initiative seeks to restore congressional oversight of immigration enforcement and reform ICE, the agency responsible for the raids. According to the statement from both organizations, the coalition of Hispanic groups proposed reforming police protocols at the federal level; guaranteeing due process; and balancing public safety with human rights. Strengthen transparency and oversight, and channel funds toward humanitarian goals.
Its launch comes amid a tightening of immigration policies across the country, which has led to mass raids and the deployment of the National Guard in cities like Los Angeles, Washington, and Memphis to protect immigration authorities during their raids.
ICE operations have often been met with criticism from activists and Democratic politicians who denounce the excessive use of force during arrests.
Thus, the president of the CHC and Democratic Congressman Adriano Espaillat described the government's measures in the statement as "urban warfare" and lamented that ICE agents make arrests without identifying themselves, hidden behind masks, and without their badge numbers.
The campaign begins four months after Congress approved an additional $170 billion allocation to ICE for mass deportations last July.
The organization Voto Latino also joined her, denouncing that Trump “has pushed immigrant families even further into the shadows” and has failed to safeguard public safety and the rule of law. Furthermore, I have noted that the State Department (DHS), which oversees ICE,“you have overstepped its bounds and continue to operate with little to no oversight.”
