Peruvian immigrant reveals how the process was to obtain the J1 visa
Content creator “Camotito” noted that she participated in the Work and Travel international exchange program
The Peruvian content creator known as “Camotito” shared her experience on TikTok during the process of obtaining the J1 visa at the United States embassy. In her account, she explained the most important steps and the questions that, according to her, can determine whether an application is approved or rejected. According to the video shared by the influencer, the young woman traveled to participate in the Work and Travel program and wanted to help other students about to begin the same process. Prior recommendations and common questions: In her account, “Camotito” began by offering practical advice to those planning to apply for the visa. She recommended arriving an hour early due to the long lines and avoiding both overly formal and overly casual attire. She explained that this was her second time applying for the visa and noted that the process was more rigorous compared to her first experience. During the interview, the consul asked her about her university studies, what year she was in, when she planned to graduate, and what her goals were upon returning to Peru. She also wanted to know if this was her first time participating in the Work and Travel program, and upon learning that it wasn't, she inquired why she had chosen a different destination than before. The influencer commented that the conversation flowed naturally, "like talking to a friend."
What can anticipate approval or rejection
One of the points that drew the most attention was the young woman's observation about passport handling during the interview. She explained that if the document is returned immediately, it means the application was rejected. On the other hand, if the passport is retained, it's usually a good sign. In her case, the process was successful, and she was able to pick up the approved document a few days later.
The TikToker also emphasized the importance of remaining calm and answering confidently. She suggested demonstrating strong ties to your home country, paying attention to your personal presentation, and preparing to answer questions about your studies, academic credentials, and rights as a program participant. “Every consultation is different,” she cautioned,“but the essential thing is to demonstrate that you have a real reason to return.” The influencer also revealed that her next destination will be Vermont and that, despite having an intermediate level of English, she was able to successfully navigate the process. She also shared that the consular appointment was scheduled between five and seven days after paying the processing fee, thanks to her agency's efforts. When asked why she decided to change her destination, she replied that she wanted to “try a new climate and a new experience.” What is the J1 visa? The J1 visa is for students, professionals, or visitors participating in cultural or educational exchange programs in the United States. It allows applicants to work or train temporarily, with the commitment to return to their home country upon completion of the program. This type of visa includes various categories, such as professional internships, au pairs, academic scholarships, or summer programs. Holders must demonstrate strong ties to their country, financial solvency, and functional proficiency in English. Furthermore, the process must be managed through an organization or agency authorized by the Department of State.
