Plane crashes into house in Ohio, leaving two dead
The impact caused an intense fire that destroyed much of the house and forced the evacuation of nearby residences. The causes of the accident are being investigated
A tragic plane crash in Ohio left two people dead Thursday afternoon, after a small plane crashed into a home in the city of Akron and caused a strong explosion followed by a fire.
The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. in the 2200 block of Canterbury Circle, where a two-story home was severely destroyed by flames.
Neighbors heard explosions after the impact
District Chief Sierjie Lash told WJW that emergency services began receiving calls from residents who observed the aircraft descending dangerously before impact.
“We received reports from people who saw the plane fall on the house,” Lash explained. “Then more calls started coming in from people who heard explosions.”
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found a dense column of black smoke visible from several kilometers away.
Authorities later confirmed that the two fatal victims were found inside the aircraft.
The families managed to escape from the homes
Despite the magnitude of the crash, no injuries were reported among the people who were inside the affected home or in the neighboring house, which also suffered damage.
Michael Phillips, a resident of the area, said he was at home with his family when the accident occurred.
“The electricity flickered and seconds later we heard a huge explosion,” he said.
Phillips said he quickly left the home and watched as his neighbor, identified as Colton “CJ” Laudato, evacuated his children from the impacted home.
"CJ ran out with the kids. Then he went back inside to get the dog out," he recalled.
Remains of the plane were embedded in the house
Images captured at the scene show severe structural damage and remains of the aircraft scattered among the properties.
Witnesses indicated that the tail of the plane was embedded near the garage of the house, while one of the wings ended up between two houses.
Another resident, identified as Jewell Ulrich, described the moment as shocking.
“We heard an extremely loud bang and then saw the fire spread immediately,” he said.
The aircraft involved was a 1963 single-engine Piper Cherokee that had taken off from Akron Fulton Airport around 2:03 p.m., according to data from FlightAware.
So far, authorities have not reported what caused the plane crash in Ohio.
The investigation was left in the hands of the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board, which are working to determine the circumstances of the accident.
