The Senate of Mexico expressed its support for the legal and diplomatic actions taken by the Government of President Claudia Sheinbaum before United States authorities after the death of 17 Mexicans in United States territory during interventions by immigration authorities. The Upper House asked that the cases be investigated with transparency and that possible responsibilities be determined.

Through a statement, the Senate indicated that it supports the efforts made before the United States Department of Justice and state authorities, in addition to demanding “exhaustive, impartial and transparent” investigations that clarify what happened and guarantee justice for the victims and their families.

The legislative institution stressed that, although it recognizes the power of each country to establish its own immigration policies, no security measure can be above respect for life, due process and international agreements on human rights.

Government of Mexico presents complaints to US authorities

The Senate's position occurs after President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her administration would file complaints with the US Department of Justice and state prosecutors' offices for the death of compatriots during immigration operations.

The president explained that the legal actions seek to address alleged violations of the human rights of Mexicans in the United States, particularly in cases registered within detention centers and during operations carried out by immigration authorities.

Among the files mentioned is the recent death of Mexican Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during an immigration operation in Houston, Texas, a case that is currently being investigated by US local and federal authorities.

Sheinbaum indicated that the complaints are also related to the death of three Mexicans during interventions by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), as well as other cases that occurred in immigration detention facilities.

Sheinbaum asks Congress to rule on the situation

The Mexican president called on Monday to the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union so that legislators from all political forces express a position on the events.

“All political parties, all without exception, also present a request for information and our rejection of the violation of the human rights of Mexicans in the United States,” Sheinbaum said.

The president insisted that Mexico will continue to use the diplomatic and legal channels available to defend the rights of its citizens abroad.

Senate will follow up on investigations and support for families

In its statement, the Senate reported that it will maintain constant monitoring of the progress of the investigations and the consular care received by the victims' families.

The Upper House announced that it will request periodic reports from the responsible authorities with the aim of knowing the development of the processes and verifying that support is provided to the affected families.

Furthermore, he reiterated that fundamental rights must be guaranteed regardless of people's immigration status.

Mexico denounces alleged violations of migrants' rights

The Mexican Government indicated that the deaths of fellow citizens are part of a series of cases recorded since the tightening of immigration policies promoted during the administration of US President Donald Trump.

According to Mexican authorities, several citizens have lost their lives in immigration detention centers or during operations carried out by US agencies, a situation that has generated concern and demands to strengthen the protection of the human rights of migrants.

With these actions, Mexico seeks that the US authorities investigate each case, determine responsibilities and guarantee mechanisms of justice and reparation for the families of the victims.
