The list of the most notable absences from the 2026 Oscar nominations
This year, 'Sinners' became the most nominated film in the history of these awards, with 16 nominations, followed by 'One Battle After Another'
Without a doubt, awards season wouldn't be complete without the Oscar nominations. After months of campaigning, interviews, festivals, and appearances, the wait is over! And, as expected, the Academy jury delivered some surprises and, above all, several notable absences.
Below, we present a list of the biggest snubs of these nominations.
'Wicked: For Good': No Nominations
The second installment of 'Wicked' captured the public's attention and received positive reviews from critics. After securing several Golden Globe nominations and being on the BAFTA longlist, it was expected that the Academy would take it into account, but this was not the case.
Ariana Grande did not receive a nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category, and the film was also not mentioned for production design or costume design. It was also surprising that neither of his two songs made the list of nominees.
Paul Mescal, out of Best Supporting Actor
According to several critics, Paul Mescal's performance in 'Hamnet' deserved to be among the nominees for Best Supporting Actor, but he was ultimately left out. In the film, Mescal plays William Shakespeare, and for many, this is considered his best role.
Miley Cyrus didn't get a nomination
Miley Cyrus's song 'Dream as One,' featured in the 'Avatar' universe, was a surprise when it wasn't nominated in the Best Original Song category. Everything indicated that Cyrus was preparing for this moment, as she promoted the song intensely for months.
Jesse Plemons, no nomination
Jesse Plemons gave a masterful performance in 'Bugunia'; However, the jury didn't think it was enough to warrant a mention.
Guillermo del Toro also left out
The Mexican director, Guillermo del Toro, seemed like a sure bet for the Best Director nomination for what he did in 'Frankenstein', but he was also left out.
Despite these snubs,There were also several surprises, such as the nomination of 'F1' for Best Picture. The Academy also showed its support for horror films and followed the pattern of other awards by nominating Amy Madigan for 'Weapons' as Best Supporting Actress. Another unexpected moment was Kate Hudson's nomination for Best Actress for her role in 'Song Sung Blue'. Undoubtedly, the actress had a major promotional campaign before the premiere, and all indications are that it paid off! The Oscars ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 15 at 7 pm (ET).
