Trump sends more agents to Chicago and Noem inspects ICE raids there
Trump ordered more Border Patrol agents to be deployed to assist in ICE raids in Chicago
Noem posted a video on her X account today of the immigration operations in which the DHS would have taken “violent criminals” off the streets.
In the images, Noem can be seen observing the arrest of a man who was detained at his home early today at an undisclosed location.
“I was present in Chicago today to make it clear that we will not give in,” the secretary wrote in her message. “Our work is just beginning,” he added.
Noem’s warning is joined by that of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) commander Gregory Bovino, who posted a video on his X account on Tuesday showing multiple Border Patrol vehicles arriving in the city accompanied by the message: “Chicago, we’re here!”
Bovino, who led the immigration offensive in Los Angeles implemented since last June, indicated that they will be in the city to continue the mission they had begun in California.
Operation “Midway Blitz” is currently focused on the Chicago metropolitan area and its suburbs. Activists and residents have multiplied sightings of masked agents and unmarked vehicles in neighborhoods with a Latino concentration.
On September 8, the DHS announced the largest-scale raids dubbed 'Operation Midway Blitz', which covers the entire state of Illinois, in addition to Lake County, in Indiana, and while they are focusing on immigrants with criminal records, immigrant advocates and elected officials have warned that “the entire community” must be on guard.
Matt Hill, a spokesman for Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a Democrat, responded to Bovino in a message on X, pointing out, among other things, the DHS’s lack of communication with the governor.
One immigrant dead and 250 detained
The operation has already left one dead, the Mexican Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, 38, who was shot by an ICE agent last Friday when he allegedly resisted arrest at a traffic stop, where he ran over one of the agents when he tried to flee.
Noem referred to the incident on Tuesday, explaining that the agent had been dragged by Villegas' vehicle for several meters, which caused serious injuries.
Governor Pritzker, like the government of Mexico, demanded “transparency” from the Trump Administration regarding the shooting of the Mexican, who was taking his son to school when he was intercepted by immigration authorities.
The raids have also left at least 250 immigrants detained since September 6, according to information from ICE cited by Democratic Congresswoman Lauren Underwood.
The People detained and processed are transferred to detention centers in the neighboring states of Indiana and Wisconsin, the House representative detailed in a statement.
The Democrat encouraged family members who have difficulty contacting people detained in these or other ICE centers to contact federal legislators in their area for assistance with their case.
An American was questioned
The operation would already be impacting American citizens. Illinois native Joe Botello told the Chicago Tribune he was handcuffed, interrogated, and put into a Border Patrol vehicle early Tuesday morning in the Chicago metropolitan area of ??Elgin. Botello told the newspaper that masked and armed agents stormed his home, smashing his front and back doors as they searched for another man. Similar scenes unfolded in Los Angeles, prompting affected individuals and immigrant rights organizations to file a lawsuit accusing the federal government of making illegal arrests based on racial profiling.
