President Donald Trump is considering the option of increasing the tariffs on Canadian exports, in retaliation for his government's poor management of preventing forest fires that, after getting out of control, are causing damage to several cities located in the north of the United States.
From the perspective of the 80-year-old Republican, his northern neighbor has neglected its forests, but above all its fire prevention work, a situation that ends up affecting American cities bordering Canada, which will not allow it to continue happening.
Therefore, the most appropriate measure that Trump plans to adopt is to punish its exports that intend to enter the United States.
“We hold Canada responsible for the fact that it is not adequately maintaining its forests and bushlands, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by dirty, polluted and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous and totally unacceptable.
“This is deliberate negligence, and it is becoming something that happens every year, costing the United States billions of dollars, the cost of this pollution must necessarily be added to the tariffs that Canada is currently paying,” he wrote on the Truth Social platform.
Since the start of his second term at the head of the White House, the New York magnate has not stopped intimidating the Canadian government with the idea of turning it into one of the states that make up the country, since his interest lies in its natural riches.
Despite having a trade agreement signed with the “Maple Leaf” country, where Mexico also appears as a partner, Trump recently surprised by announcing that said pact would not be renewed, as he considers it inequitable for the interests of the United States.
In fact, he anticipated that each year of the 10 remaining years of the T-MEC he would carry out reviews to verify the existence of a true benefit for US finances.
However, both Canada and Mexico do not plan to modify anything that is already stated in the agreement, which has bothered the US president and hence the search for any pretext to threaten to raise tariffs on their imports.
However, it is proven that the forest fires started in Canadian territory are affecting more than a dozen US entities whose inhabitants are on alert due to the poor quality of the air they are breathing as a result of the fire in nature.
