The U.S. 250th anniversary celebration will include fireworks at Mount Rushmore
A fireworks display at Mount Rushmore adds to the celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S.
A fireworks show illuminating Mount Rushmore, located in Keystone, South Dakota, will be added to the packed schedule for celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
According to the website of the The National Park Service (NPS) announced that on the eve of July 4th, the filament covering the sculpture known as the Shrine of Democracy, carved from granite by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, will be illuminated by colorful fireworks, paying tribute to former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln, immortalized 18 meters high. Thus, on the evening of July 3rd, the mountain used as a memorial, sculpted between 1927 and 1941, will be illuminated to celebrate independence in a way not seen for several years. The most recent fireworks display at the site took place in 2020, when Republican Kristi Noem, then governor of South Dakota, invited President Donald Trump to witness the show. This was done despite a report submitted four years earlier by the Geological Survey, which indicated that past fireworks displays were the likely cause of the elevated concentrations of a contaminant called perchlorate detected in the groundwater and surface water at Mount Rushmore. Following pressure from some environmental groups in 2021, the NPS issued a statement clarifying that “the use and possession of fireworks are illegal on all lands managed by the National Park Service.” Under this statement, 12 months later, the South Dakota Department of Tourism was denied a permit application to use fireworks in the area where the artwork is located. Given that this is a very special date in the nation's history,Once again, a fireworks show will be held, which can be attended by participating in a lottery from April 8th to 12th, paying a non-refundable application fee of one dollar to request up to four tickets.
