US Consulate issued a security alert due to acts of violence in Baja California Sur
US authorities are aware of at least two security incidents that occurred near the San José del Cabo International Airport
The United States Consulate General in Tijuana issued a security alert for its citizens who are in or traveling to Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, following the recent acts of violence recorded in the San José del Cabo area.
According to the diplomatic representation, US authorities are aware of at least two security incidents that occurred near the San José del Cabo International Airport, the main arrival point for national and foreign tourists visiting the tourist destination.
In the notice, the consulate warned that new episodes of violence could be recorded at any time, so it urged American citizens to remain attentive to their surroundings and follow the instructions of local authorities.
Although the violent events have been recorded outside the traditional tourist areas, the US government indicated that a large number of its citizens transit through the San José del Cabo airport during their trips to the region.
The alert was issued after a series of clashes that occurred over the weekend and on Monday in San José del Cabo, where injured people and two deaths were reported - among them a US citizen - as well as security operations that led to the seizure of weapons, explosives and arrests of alleged members of criminal groups.
As part of the recommendations, the consulate recalled that United States government employees have restrictions on making night road trips in Mexico.
He also suggested using only identifiable transportation services when leaving the airport.
US authorities indicated that they will continue to monitor the situation in Baja California Sur and asked their citizens to stay informed through official security and emergency channels.
