The strong earthquake of magnitude 7.4 activated a tsunami warning this Friday for the southern coasts of Mexico and Guatemala, according to the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of the Navy (CAT-SEMAR).

The official bulletin indicates that the area most affected is the coast of Chiapas and Oaxaca, states in southern Mexico, where sea level variations of up to 105 centimeters above the tide are expected.

The CAT-SEMAR statement recommends "keeping the population away from the beaches until the alert is cancelled; strong currents are expected at the entrance to the ports."

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.4 on the Richter scale, was recorded in southern Mexico, with its epicenter in Ciudad Hidalgo (Chiapas state), near the border with Guatemala, without authorities reporting any fatalities or serious damage.

It occurred at 08:48 local time (14:48 GMT), as reported by the National Seismological Service.

The Civil Protection Secretariat of Chiapas explained, in its X account, that it is “active” and in “constant monitoring” of the situation in the different regions of the state, without offering more details for the moment.

Emergency personnel from municipal entities are already deployed in different areas of Chiapas in order to carry out “monitoring tours to identify possible effects,” added the state agency.
