EE.UU. Announces Sanctions Against La Mayiza, a Sinaloa Cartel Faction Fighting to the Death with Los Chapitos
According to the US government, La Mayiza traffics fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, heroin and methamphetamines from northwestern Mexico into the country
In the midst of the fight against international organized crime and cartels recently designated as terrorist organizations, the U.S. government announced specific sanctions against “La Mayiza,” the Sinaloa Cartel faction formed by allies of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who is currently detained in the country on drug and bribery charges.
In a statement, the Treasury Department named five high-ranking members of La Mayiza and 15 entities allegedly linked to this criminal group.
This blacklist includes Juan Jose Ponce Felix, alias “El Ruso,” whom Washington considers the main person responsible for the power struggles with “Los Chapitos,” heirs in turn to the other great leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
The sanctions were announced two days after the State Department offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the capture of “El Ruso.”
They are also accused of various cases of kidnapping, extortion, money laundering, and bribery of local governments.
According to EFE, La Mayiza and Los Chapitos have been engaged in violent clashes since last year, when one of El Chapo’s sons, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, allegedly set a trap for El Mayo Zambada and handed him over to U.S. authorities in El Paso.
