If you still have two thousand rupee notes, then today is the last chance to exchange it and deposit it in your account. Two thousand rupee notes will neither be exchanged nor deposited in banks after October 7. However, there will be facility to change these in 19 regional offices of RBI. Those who are unable to go will be able to exchange notes through post. 

RBI said, 96 percent i.e. Rs 3.43 lakh crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes have returned to the banks. Of these, 87 percent notes have been deposited, while 13 percent have been exchanged with smaller value notes. However, 3.37 percent i.e. Rs 12,000 crore notes are still in the market.

Earlier, RBI had fixed September 30 as the last date for depositing Rs 2,000 notes in banks. But RBI had extended the date for exchanging notes and depositing it in the account to October 7. Let us tell you, on May 19 this year, RBI had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 note from circulation. After this, people deposited Rs 2,000 notes in banks and also got them returned. However, except in the initial days, there was not much crowd in the banks during this period.

In the statement issued by RBI, it was also said that even after October 7, Rs 2000 bank notes will remain valid. Courts, law enforcement agencies, government departments or public authorities will be able to deposit Rs 2000 bank notes at any of the 19 RBI issue offices without any limit as and when required during investigation or proceedings.

According to data received from banks, out of Rs 3.56 lakh crore 2000 bank notes in circulation till May 19, 2023, notes worth Rs 3.42 lakh crore have been returned to the banks. After the close of business on September 29, only Rs 0.14 lakh crore remained in circulation. Thus, 96% of the Rs 2000 bank notes in circulation on 19 May 2023 are now back in the banks.
