An ada. He accomplished it with the help of Claude, Anthropic's artificial intelligence assistant, in what is already described as one of the most striking cases of cryptocurrency recovery with AI. 

How Claude found what nobody could

The story began long before the bailout. The user had bought those Bitcoin around 2014 or 2015, but overtime lost access to his wallet for a password problem. For years he tried to recover them on his own, spent hundreds of dollars on recovery services, and never got anywhere. 

That's when he made an unconventional decision: he uploaded the entire contents of his old college computer to Claude. Files, notes, backups, everything. More than 1 gigabyte of historical data that the model analyzed for clues. 

What Claude found was a wallet backup file from 2019, prior to the password change, which was still encrypted with a key that the user had year ted in a notebook from his college days. The key was “lol420fuckthePOLICE!*:)” — exactly the type of password that a college student would write and forget. 

The bug that blocked everything for years

Here comes the most interesting technical detail. The user was no stranger to recovery tools. Had tried to use btcrecover, an open-source utility widely used to crack Bitcoin wallets. The problem is that didn't work. 

Claude identified why. The tool had a bug in the decryption logic: it was concatenating the shared key with the password in the wrong order. A subtle, almost imperceptible error that made all the generated combinations invalid.

What we see here is not magic or hacking. Claude didn't “crack” any cryptographic encryption, something that would be practically impossible. What he did was something more valuable in this context: massive analysis of unstructured data and code debugging in real-time. 

The difference with a human isn't intelligence, it's scale and patience. Going through more than a gigabyte of old files looking for specific patterns is accurate Mind you, the type of task that AI excels at. And fixing a bug in a third-party tool, with enough context, is something that Claude handles with ease.

What this case does raise is an important reflection for any crypto holder: storing private keys and seed phrases in an orderly and secure manner It is still as important today as it was ten years ago. AI can be an extraordinary ally, but it does not replace good security hygiene from the beginning.
