The fifth generation of the model will arrive with an unusual strategy in the industry. Instead of betting on a single technology, the Munich firm decided to offer different alternatives to adapt to different markets and needs. There will be options with electrified combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, a fully electric version and, for the first time, another powered by hydrogen.

This renewal will also serve as one of the great showcases of the Neue Klasse platform, on which BMW will develop a good part of its future vehicles and several of the technologies that will define the next generation of the brand.
Five alternatives for the same SUV
Since it appeared in 1999, the X5 has been one of the most influential models in the premium SUV segment. For the 2027 generation, BMW maintains that innovative philosophy by making it the company's first vehicle to be available with five different propulsion systems.
The range will include gasoline engines with Mild Hybrid technology, electrified diesel variants, plug-in hybrids, a fully electric version and a model equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell.
BMW's intention is to offer different mobility solutions while continuing the transition towards a range with lower emissions.
The electric iX5 promises great autonomy
One of the protagonists will be the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, the first fully electric variant of the X5. This model will use an 800-volt electrical architecture and a new generation of batteries with 120-millimeter cylindrical cells.
According to the brand, it can travel up to 525 miles on a single charge. In addition, it will incorporate ultra-fast charging and bidirectional technology, a function that will allow it to supply power to external devices or even power a compatible home when necessary.
Hydrogen will also have its place
BMW is not abandoning the development of hydrogen either. The new iX5 Hydrogen will be the company's first production model equipped with a fuel cell, a technology that the manufacturer has been testing for several years before making the leap to commercial production.
This version will have hydrogen tanks developed under BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage technology, a new generation high-voltage battery and an estimated range of up to 466 miles, figures that seek to make it a real alternative to battery electric vehicles.
Renewed design and more technology
The new X5 will also present an important evolution in its exterior image. The Neue Klasse philosophy is reflected in a more vertical front, clean lines and a more robust appearance. The entire range will debut the BMW Iconic Glow illuminated grille, a new lighting signature with double “X” graphics, integrated handles called BMW Winglets and wheels up to 23 inches.
The offer will include eleven body colors, in addition to the M Sport, M Sport Pro packages and the BMW X5 M60e xDrive sports version. There will also be M Performance accessories made of carbon fiber and aramid for those looking for an even sportier look.
The cabin also changes significantly with a much cleaner and more technological proposal. BMW is committed to natural materials, decorative surfaces made of glass and, for the first time, applications in natural slate.
Among the new features are the BMW Panoramic iDrive system, the BMW
Added to all this is a new multifunction steering wheel, surround ambient lighting and a standard adaptive suspension that works together with a weight distribution close to 50:50.
Adaptive chassis control, level 2 driving assistants and the BMW Symbiotic Drive system, capable of adjusting the electronic aids to the user's driving style, will also be available. The electric versions will also debut the BMW Soft-Stop function, designed to offer smoother braking.
Production of the 2027 BMW The starting price will be $71,250, while the all-electric version will start at $81,250 when it hits the market in 2027.
