The new Opel Corsa GSE appears as the most aggressive and sporty interpretation that this compact has received in years. The German brand took the base of the Corsa electric or conventional and took it to another level with more power, a setup focused on performance and several elements inspired by the classic European hot hatches.
The curious thing is that, despite its sports proposal and its eye-catching figures, this model has no plans to reach the US market.
A compact electric with sports soul
Opel recovered the acronyms GSE, corresponding to Grand Sport Electric, to return to the Corsa part of the essence left by historical models such as the Corsa GSi. The difference now is that everything revolves around electrification.
The new compact uses an electrical system capable of generating 281 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Grac ias to that configuration, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 112 mph.
The proposal is not limited solely to offering power in a straight line. Opel also incorporated different driving modes designed for different scenarios.
The Sport mode unlocks the full potential of the system and adjusts the settings for a more aggressive experience. Normal finds a balance for daily use, while Eco prioritises efficiency and limits certain features to extend autonomy.
More technology and better behavior
Underneath the body appears a 54 kWh battery accompanied by an optimized thermal management system. This allows stable performance to be maintained even when the vehicle is pushed to the limit.
The estimated range exceeds 210 miles, a competitive figure within this segment. In addition, Opel added bidirectional V2L technology, allowing to use the car's power to power external devices or power tools.
Another interesting detail appears in the tuning of the chassis. The Corsa GSE incorporates a Torsen self-locking differential, an unusual solution in compact electric cars and which considerably improves traction when exiting curves.
Added to that are a lowered suspension, specific shock absorbers and recalibrated steering to offer more precise responses.
Aggressive design and sporty details
Visually, the Corsa GSE makes clear that it is not a conventional version. The front presents much more marked lines, prominent air intakes and several details finished in black.
The dark roof and the rear spoiler help reinforce the sporty image, while the 18-inch wheels accompanied by Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires finish complete the whole.
The visible brake calipers with the GSE emblem are also part of a much more radical aesthetic than that of the traditional Corsa.
An interior designed to excite
Inside doors, Opel mixed modern elements with quite marked sporty winks. The seats with alcantara finish, the yellow belts and contrast stitching seek to generate an atmosphere closer to that of a high performance hatchback.
The multimedia system includes a 10-inch central display and specific graphics related to the vehicle's performance. The driver can view acceleration, G-force,and energy management data in real-time.
The Opel Corsa GSE will be officially launched towards the end of the year and, although the brand has not yet confirmed the definitive price, estimates point to a figure close to $40,000 dollars.
