The morning of this Thursday, July 23, has been marked by various global and economic events that have impacted currencies. Oil rose, Wall Street fell and tensions in the Middle East worsen. Against this backdrop, the dollar in Mexico registered a surprising rise in value against the Mexican peso, although this could change drastically over the course of the day.
At the opening this Thursday, the US dollar was quoted on average at $17.51 Mexican pesos, which represents an increase of 0.68% compared to the previous close of $17.39 pesos, according to Dow Jones data.
During the last week, the US currency accumulates an advance of 0.49% against the Mexican peso. However, compared to the same period last year, the dollar maintains a depreciation of 6.67%, which reflects that the Mexican currency maintains an appreciation in the annual balance.
Regarding recent behavior, the exchange rate registered a consecutive day of strengthening for the dollar. Even so, the movements remain within a moderate range. The volatility of the foreign exchange market was 7.26%, below the reference volatility of 7.51%, a sign of relative stability in operations.
During Wednesday's session, the Mexican peso was practically unchanged against the dollar due to the markets' caution over trade talks between Mexico and the United States.
The Bank of Mexico (Banxico) reported that the official closing on Wednesday, July 22, was $17.3989 pesos per dollar, a figure calculated based on the average of banking operations carried out during the day. However, because the exchange market continues to operate during the day, the exchange rate ended the session around $17.41 pesos per US currency.

Among the banks consulted, Banco Azteca offers the lowest sales price for those who want to buy dollars on this occasion. On the contrary, although this company led the last few days in the purchase price, now Banamex and Scotiabank register the best price in this area.
In the banks of Mexico and the northern border, the dollar is sold on average for $17.79 pesos and purchased for $16.65 pesos. For their part, exchange houses located in border cities, such as those in Tamaulipas, maintain an average of $17.50 pesos for sales and $16.50 pesos for purchases.

Oil exceeds $100 dollars and Wall Street collapses
International financial markets are experiencing a day of strong pressure following the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. Attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea and rising tensions between the United States and Iran pushed the price of Brent crude oil above $100 per barrel, while WTI oil also rose strongly.
Nervousness reached Wall Street, added to the fact that the yield on the 10-year US Treasury bond exceeded 4.7%, its highest level since January 2025.
“These issues have become too important to ignore,” Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers, said on CNBC. "It's too hard to ignore $100 oil. It's too hard to ignore 10-year rates that are above 4.70%. It's too hard for the stock market to ignore 30-year rates that remain firmly above 5%."
Among the companies with the greatest losses, Alphabet stands out, whose shares fell around 6% after raising its investment forecast for 2026 to a maximum of $205 billion to strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure. Tesla also pulled back sharply after reporting a decline in its second-quarter earnings; In fact, it could face its worst day since June 2025, with a drop of 14% so far.
If dollar quotes can change several times before the close of trading, all these events could cause greater volatility in the currency market. If you plan to send remittances or make international payments, it is advisable to check the current exchange rate before carrying out any operation.
