Walmart suspends job offers for those who require an H-1B visa
Walmart suspends hiring for those who require an H-1B visa after the new $100,000 fee imposed by the Trump administration
Bad news for those aspiring to work at Walmart. The company has decided to temporarily pause job postings for H-1B visa applicants.
The move is in direct response to Donald Trump's recent policy that imposed a $100,000 fee on many new applications for the visa, which is designed to fill high-skilled positions that American companies find difficult to fill with local talent.
In a statement provided to several media outlets, including Newsweek and CNN, the company said it is “committed to hiring and investing in the best talent to serve our customers, while remaining thoughtful about our H-1B hiring approach.”
How the New H-1B Visa Fee Affects Walmart and Other Companies
Typically, large technology companies are the largest users, with approximately 75% of recipients being Indian nationals.
However, Walmart employs about 2,390 H-1B visa holders, according to CNN, making it the largest user of this type of visa among retail chains.
This company's move demonstrates how companies are reevaluating their international hiring strategies in light of new regulations imposed by Trump. In this sense, the high cost of sponsoring visas may affect budgets for hiring and planning for foreign talent.
For candidates who required H-1B sponsorship, this decision implies a delay or pause in their employment opportunities at Walmart.
It should be noted that the $100,000 fee does not necessarily apply to renewals or extensions of existing visas; however, it continues to create uncertainty for employers and workers.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) updated its website on October 21 to clarify who must pay the fee and which people are exempt.
