Trump selects his Miami Doral resort to host the 2026 G20 summit in Florida
President Donald Trump announced Friday that the 2026 G20 Summit will be held at his Doral resort in Miami, Florida.
Trump shared the decision during a press conference in the Oval Office, noting that the location was ideal due to its proximity to the airport.
“It will be very exciting to host the G20,” Trump said. “As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary next year, the United States will have the honor of hosting just that: the G20 summit right here in the United States for the first time in nearly 20 years.” This will be the first time the U.S. has hosted the summit of the world’s major economies since 2009 when Pittsburgh hosted it. According to the president, a resort he owns, the Trump National Doral Miami, will be the dedicated venue for the occasion. “Everyone wants it to be there because it’s right by the airport,” the president said, adding that he “doesn’t make any money” by hosting it on a property he owns. Trump was flanked by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez as he made the official announcement that Miami would host the summit and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said that hosting the summit “means the United States will showcase what it has to offer with the president’s leadership.” Trump.”
The luxury resort, which features four golf courses among other amenities, is located just six miles from Miami International Airport.
Following the announcement, Trump confirmed that he will not attend this year’s G20 in South Africa, a country he has harshly criticized for his political differences with the South African leader.
“I will not be going this year,” Trump told reporters, citing tensions with South African leaders. Vice President JD Vance will represent the United States at the November meeting in Johannesburg.
South Africa assumed the rotating presidency of the G20 on December 1, 2024, and will hold it until November 30 of this year, when the United States will take over.
What is the G20?
The Group of 20, or G20, is an international forum that brings together the world's major economies to discuss global economic policy, trade, and financial stability.
Founded in 1999 in the wake of the Asian financial crisis, it is composed of 19 countries and the European Union, representing approximately 85% of global GDP and two-thirds of the world's population.
The summit is held annually and serves as a forum for leaders to coordinate their responses to economic crises, climate change, and geopolitical challenges.
While it is not a formal international organization with binding authority, its communiques typically define global priorities and reflect consensus among advanced and emerging economies.
