An Atlanta Police Department officer allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend before taking his own life, according to a preliminary investigation by authorities in Fulton County, Georgia. The bodies were found on December 28 at the officer's residence after friends alerted 911 after losing contact with the couple for several days. The deceased were identified as Kevin Stroner, 56, a 13-year police veteran, and Moriah Cardona, 44. Both had last been seen at a gathering on Christmas Day. The call that alerted authorities: Concerned by the prolonged silence, several friends went to Stroner's home. Through a window, one of them observed the couple motionless on the bedroom floor. In the 911 call, the witness reported the presence of "two bodies" and a firearm between them, as well as a large amount of blood in the room. When officers arrived at the scene to conduct a welfare check, they confirmed that the two individuals were deceased. No other people were found inside the residence.

Autopsy confirms homicide and suicide

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Cardona's death was a homicide by gunshot wound, while Stroner died by suicide, also with a firearm. Authorities indicated that there is no danger to the community and that the incident was an isolated event.

Deputy Chief Prenzinna Spann noted that the officers who initially responded to the call were unaware that the deceased man was an active member of the Atlanta Police Department.

Officer's career and community outcry

Stroner had received commendations throughout his career for his involvement in significant arrests, including robbery and armed assault cases, according to department records.Neighbors in the area described the officer as a quiet person and a “good neighbor,” and expressed their surprise at the outcome. Regarding Cardona, those close to her indicated that she was a reserved woman and remembered her as a “beautiful person.” Although the cause and manner of death have been determined, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the murder-suicide. So far, no possible motive has been revealed.
