British journalist is detained by ICE for his alleged support of terrorism
Sami Hamdi is editor-in-chief of The International Interest
British political analyst and journalist Sami Hamdi was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at San Francisco International Airport after arriving in the United States as part of a speaking tour. According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Hamdi's wife, Soumaya Hamdi, has only been able to communicate with him for thirty seconds since his detention. The family, who reside in the United Kingdom and have three children, one of them a ten-month-old baby, reported that they are being kept in the dark about his whereabouts and conditions. Detention and Legal Process: According to information released by Newsweek, Hamdi was transferred to the Golden State Annex detention center in McFarland, California, where he remains in ICE custody. CAIR California reported that its legal team filed a petition for habeas corpus and an emergency temporary restraining order to prevent his transfer or deportation while the case is reviewed. According to the family, Hamdi had entered the country with a valid visa, which was suddenly revoked upon his arrival. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officially confirmed the visa cancellation in an October 26 statement, in which a spokesperson affirmed that the United States will not allow entry or employment to “those who support terrorism or undermine national security.”
Official Reasons for Arrest
The DHS maintains that the arrest is based on statements Hamdi allegedly made in a speech days after the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. In that speech, Hamdi supposedly said, “Don’t pity them… celebrate the victory,” and asked his audience “how many felt euphoria.” He later clarified that he was not celebrating violence or death, but rather the resurgence of the Palestinian cause.
His defenders assert that the disseminated excerpts, including a video shared by the MEMRI group and picked up by the DHS, were edited to alter the meaning of his words. The journalist's wife described the material as manipulation produced by an "openly Islamophobic and anti-Arab" organization, while CAIR warned that canceling a visa for ideological reasons "puts anyone who expresses opinions contrary to the US government at risk." Who is Sami Hamdi? Sami Hamdi is editor-in-chief of The International Interest, a political analysis magazine focused on the Middle East, East Asia, and the United Kingdom. With a law degree from the University of London (SOAS), he has established himself as one of the most recognized voices on geopolitics and foreign policy from a Muslim perspective. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with media outlets such as Al Jazeera, BBC, and Sky News, offering analysis on international conflicts, the dynamics of the Arab world, and diplomatic relations. In recent years, he has participated in conferences in various countries addressing issues of press freedom, identity, and geopolitical power.
The future of his case
DHS reported that Hamdi will remain in ICE custody until deportation proceedings are completed, while his legal team prepares for a hearing scheduled for November.
