He stole a kitten from a store and then tried to rob a bank in Maryland
A man was arrested in Maryland after stealing a kitten from a pet store and taking it to a nearby bank before handing over a note demanding money.
A man stole a three-month-old kitten named Magnolia from a Maryland pet store and, minutes later, tried to rob a nearby bank, according to authorities.
Prince George's County Police reported that the suspect was arrested and that the kitten was recovered without injuries.
The suspect would have taken the kitten to a bank before the robbery attempt
According to security images obtained by NBC Washington, a man wearing a light T-shirt and a black hat entered a Pet Supplies Plus store located on Baltimore Avenue and left seconds later carrying Magnolia, a three-month-old black and white kitten.
Witnesses indicated that the man went directly to a PNC Bank branch located in the same shopping center.
Stephanie Stullich, a member of the Beltsville Community Cats rescue organization, said she received an emergency call around 10:30 a.m. to inform her that Magnolia had disappeared from the store's adoption area.
Initially, the activist was surprised by the police deployment in the area, until she discovered that the response was related to an incident at the bank.
A note demanding money and an unexpected companion
According to Stullich, the agents later explained that the suspect entered the bank with the kitten in his arms and asked an employee to hold her.
He then allegedly handed a note to a teller demanding money.
Police confirmed that a man was detained inside the financial institution. Authorities did not say whether he was able to obtain cash before he was arrested.
Aaron Kurkowski, manager of the Pet Supplies Plus store, said the suspect had visited the store almost every day for the past few weeks, often heading directly toward Magnolia.
“He just went towards her and ran away,” he told the local media.
Following the arrest, Beltsville Community Cats confirmed that the kitten was recovered unharmed. The organization even joked on social media that Magnolia's brief “life of crime” had come to an end.
According to the rescue group, during the incident the feline developed a certain affinity with the bank manager.
The kitten is still looking for a home
Despite the unique experience, Magnolia remains available for adoption.
The organization describes her as an affectionate, playful and very sociable kitten, who enjoys hugs, adventures and the company of other pets.
“You're looking for a law-abiding citizen with a lot of love in his heart,” Stullich said.
