Man accused of murdering his wife in California and fleeing to Peru is extradited
Jossimar Cabrera had fled to Peru with his three children after murdering his wife and dumping her body in a forest
A Lancaster man accused of murdering his wife, dumping her body in a forest, and then fleeing to Peru has been extradited to the United States, authorities said.
Jossimar Cabrera was arrested around 7:30 pm Friday at Los Angeles International Airport for the murder of Sheylla Gutierrez. He was taken to the police station and charged with murder, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement. Cabrera was arrested in Peru in late August and was awaiting extradition to the United States to face a murder charge filed by the prosecution. US Marshals assisted homicide detectives and the Sheriff's Bureau of Serious Crimes Fugitive Task Force in apprehending Cabrera. Gutierrez's body was found on August 16 at the bottom of an embankment in the Angeles National Forest. The 33-year-old victim had been reported missing on August 12. Homicide detectives reported locating surveillance footage of Cabrera dragging a heavy object wrapped in a large piece of cloth from his apartment complex in Lancaster. When the victim's body was discovered, it was wrapped in a similar material, according to the Sheriff's Department. The suspect had fled to Peru with the couple's three children, but decided to voluntarily surrender on August 27 at Interpol headquarters in Lima, assisted by his lawyer. The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on August 16 on social media that it had repatriated the children to Los Angeles via Mexico City so they could be reunited with their mother's family.
