Mother charged with murder after the death of her five-week-old baby in Maryland

The small community of Rising Sun, Maryland, remains in shock after the death of Kai'Ella, a baby just five weeks old, whose passing led to a first-degree murder charge against her mother, 24-year-old Destiny Chiveral.
The investigation began on the morning of December 4, when state police and emergency services responded to a home after a 911 call reporting an unconscious baby. Upon arrival, first responders found the child lifeless and showing signs of having died hours earlier.
Videos and alcohol consumption under analysis
According to court documents, investigators are basing part of their case on ten videos recorded by Chiveral herself the night before the death. The footage shows the woman consuming alcoholic beverages and displaying a progressively intoxicated state.
One of the recordings, captured minutes before 1:00 a.m., shows the baby crying on the sofa while the mother records herself. Another video shows her trying to get through a baby gate, claiming to be “too drunk” to do so normally.
Forensic Findings Contradict the Account
The autopsy revealed that Kai'Ella had a brain hemorrhage and a hematoma on her forehead, injuries that, according to medical examiners, were caused by considerable force and do not match the explanation offered by the mother.
Chiveral initially stated that the baby had become trapped between the sofa cushions while they slept, but investigators indicated that the injuries are not explained by that scenario.

A woman who was sleeping in the house stated that she saw Chiveral enter her room at 1:47 a.m., shortly after the last video recorded that night.
