Teen charged with killing mother after arguing over Facebook posts in Alabama
A neighbor said he heard a loud argument related to posts that the woman made on Facebook about her son's behavior.
A 17-year-old boy faces a murder charge after being accused of fatally stabbing his mother and seriously injuring his father during an incident Sunday night in the town of Daphne, Alabama.
Authorities identified the suspect as Brandon Baker, who allegedly attacked his mother, Samantha Baker, 37, and his father, Lance Baker, 46, with a kitchen knife after a family argument.
According to a neighbor cited by the New York Post, shortly before the attack he heard a loud argument between mother and son related to publications that Samantha made on Facebook about the teenager's behavior.
Neighbor assures that the discussion began with posts on Facebook
According to the testimony of neighbor Shawn Scurry, Brandon complained to his mother about a comment posted on a Facebook story, while she responded that “it was just a story,” in reference to the social network's temporary publication format.
Scurry stated that the discussion could be heard from several homes in the area and considered that Samantha's publications about her son "were beginning to affect him."
On her Facebook profile, the woman had shared messages on different occasions about the difficulties of raising a teenager. In a post for Brandon's birthday he wrote: “You are an amazing person and at the same time you make my blood boil.”
In January he also published a meme that said: "Respectful parenting is for calm children. Mine have to be handled differently." On another occasion he wrote: "Raising a teenage son... 0/10. I don't recommend it."
However, her social networks also showed family photographs, images with her husband supporting their children at football games and church activities.
Police say the attack occurred after another disciplinary discussion
Captain Justin Correa of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office indicated that, after the disagreement over social media posts, the parents had a new argument with Brandon related to a disciplinary matter within the home.
According to authorities, the teenager grabbed a kitchen knife, chased his parents out of the home and stabbed them multiple times.
Samantha Baker suffered several stab wounds and later died in hospital. Lance Baker was seriously injured and airlifted to a medical facility, where he remains in stable condition.
The couple's youngest son, 16 years old, was not home when the attack occurred.
A neighbor recounts the moments after the stabbing
Scurry assured that a home security camera recorded audio of the attack and that he was able to recognize Samantha's screams.
He also stated that he heard the father begging for his life while asking neighbors for help.
According to his story, Lance Baker tried to escape and went through several houses in the neighborhood leaving bloody footprints on the doors while his son allegedly chased him.
Authorities said Brandon Baker later returned to the home and called 911 to report what he described as a domestic problem.
The teenager was arrested and remains in custody with bail set at $1 million. According to authorities, he will be prosecuted as an adult.
Samantha Baker had served for six years in the United States National Guard and Army Reserve and was currently working as a real estate agent. Her husband has more than 26 years of service in the US Army Reserve.
