Even after nearly a decade, some topics remain sensitive territory. This is something Tom Hiddleston amply demonstrated during a recent interview on the British radio show 'Heart,' where an unexpected mention of his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift was enough to freeze the atmosphere and trigger a reaction of pure discomfort.

The situation unfolded casually. Hiddleston, 44, along with his 'The Life of Chuck' co-star Karen Gillan, were chatting with host Devin Griffin about how they spend their nights off.

The actor's response was natural and relaxed: immersing himself in the world of sports, following highlights and reading specialized journalists. Safe territory, or so it seemed.

The awkward moment of the interview

It was then that Griffin, in a twist that seemed calculatedly forced, completely changed the subject: "We just found out that Taylor Swift is a big fan of a sourdough recipe blog. Very, very specific.”

Hiddleston’s reaction was instantaneous and eloquent. Far from an easy smile or a polite but evasive response, the actor frowned, tilted his head back, and let out a peculiar, tense “Hmmm.”

It was a micro-moment laden with nonverbal communication that screamed louder than any words: a clear desire to stay out of that puddle.

The discomfort, however, wasn’t immediately perceived by the presenter, who tried to continue, despite the forced connection: “I can see how you can get into that!”

Fortunately, Karen Gillan came to her partner’s rescue, cleverly diverting the conversation towards fan theories on TikTok linking Swift’s fondness for sourdough to a possible “easter egg” related to the upcoming Super Bowl.

Hiddleston nimbly backed up the detour by joking about Gillan's "deep knowledge of the NFL," thus managing to bury the uncomfortable topic.

The contrast couldn't be more stark. While in the past,Hiddleston has been generous with his praise for Swift—even telling GQ in 2017 that “Taylor is an incredible woman. She’s generous, kind, and lovely, and we had a great time”—but the present seems to dictate a policy of absolute silence.

This incident shows that, despite the time that has passed since their four-month romance in the summer of 2016, the specter of that very public relationship remains a sensitive subject for the actor.
