Andrea Meza admits having suffered eating disorders due to criticism of her physique
The former Miss Universe opened her heart and shared the repercussions that the attacks on her physique had on her emotionally and mentally
Andrea Meza's reign at Miss Universe 2020 was marked by two important events: the Covid-19 pandemic and the wave of divided opinions that her triumph generated. And while thousands of people around the world celebrated the Mexican woman taking the crown on the pageant, others did not hesitate to express their discontent and make her the target of criticism related to her physique.
Four years after her coronation, the host of "La Mesa Caliente" has decided to break the silence about this experience, surprising everyone with a confession that moved the public.
"People hated me to the point of wishing I would die just because of how I looked," she said to her colleagues on the show: Veronica Bastos, Myrka Dellanos and Giselle Blondet. “An impressive level of hate, but I had already been working a lot on my self-esteem,” she added.
As revealed by Andrea Meza, the pressure that her profession as a beauty queen brings with it has made her face self-esteem issues and even eating disorders on previous occasions: “I, in other experiences, even had eating disorders because it was that pressure that you have to look a certain way,” she detailed.
Therefore, when she won at Miss Universe, she tried to protect herself emotionally and mentally to avoid relapsing into these narratives: “I said: 'I'm going to do what's best for my body, work it normally, have a balanced, healthy diet, take care of myself, love myself, but I'm not going to let them try to put me in any stereotype and if I win, I'm going to win because I'm myself, with the body that God gave me.' And I won," she added.
Despite this strength, Andrea Meza confessed to having had moments of self-doubt during the process: "Even so, when I was in that process the comments affected me because we are human beings. It hurt me (...) It hits you very hard," the host added.
However, today she is more aware than ever that her value does not lie in the crown she won at Miss Universe, but in the way you manage your daily life.
